You're starting the day fresh and step into the shower, but a few seconds after turning on the water, the drain begins to back up—oh no, the shower drain is clogged.
Reasons: There could be several reasons, but let's address the most common ones.
#1 Hair: Yes, hair is one of the main culprits. There's not much we can do about it besides preventing hair from going down the drain.
#2 An old galvanized or cast iron pipe: Old pipes accumulate buildup over time, which restricts the flow of water and causes drains to clog frequently.
#3 Vent pipes: These also play an important role in water flow. If there's a restriction in the vent pipe, like debris or even a rodent that tried to enter and got stuck, it will prevent the drain from having proper airflow. This affects gravity's ability to carry down the sewage.
#4 Missing the shower drain strainer: Without a strainer, anything can easily go down the drain, such as hair, bar soap, or even a toy or any foreign object near the drain opening.
How can I unclog a drain pipe? Start by using a drain snake. Be careful with coat hangers, as they could get stuck and exacerbate the problem. Replacing the drain pipes offers a long-term fix. If the vent is obstructed, it must be cleared. Additionally, ensure you have a new strainer if one is missing.
